Golden Star Award

The Legion Foundation BC/Yukon believes that it is important to connect school children with the history of Canada and the important role of veterans. In partnership with the BC Retired Teacher’s Association (BCRTA) Excellence in Public Education Committee, awards are given each year to celebrate school programs that feature the interaction of seniors and students.

The grand prize winner for 2022 was Upper Sumas Elementary School in Abbotsford, BC. Debbie Mar’s Grade 2-3 class spent the school year working on various projects of remembrance. Students wrote poetry for local seniors and created a group poem called You are a Gift. They also created paintings and wrote about their favourite flowers to share with local seniors. The multi-year collaboration between students and seniors, including members of Legion Branch 15 Abbotsford, was powerful and caring.

The “Tulip Project” recognizing the role of Canadian soldiers in the liberation of Holland was a wonderful learning opportunity for students. The “Tulip Project” was recognized by Veteran Affairs Canada and students were invited to Seaforth armory as guests of honour to receive Boots of Remembrance and meet World War 2 veterans.
