Celebrating Our First VHP Graduate!

Since the Veterans Homelessness Program began in June 2024, we have worked directly with over 50 Veterans from across BC and the Yukon who were either homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless. For some Veterans, a bit of help with their damage deposit or rental arrears is all they need to get back on their feet. However, for others, an ongoing monthly rent supplement is needed. We are pleased to say that we now have our first “graduate” of the program! Here is his story:

When Steve*, a 36 year-old Navy Veteran from Vancouver Island, lost his job, his world fell apart. While struggling with mental health, his marriage broke down, and Steve soon found himself without a home or source of income. With nowhere to turn, he felt hopeless.

Through his VAC Case Manager, Steve was connected with the Veterans Homelessness Program. Maria, the Program Coordinator, helped Steve secure housing, covered his damage deposit and set him up with ongoing rental assistance. On move-in day, a local Legion Branch Service Officer delivered an Apartment Kit to Steve and helped him arrange for furniture, turning the space into a home.

With a stable foundation, Steve was able to focus on getting back on his feet. Within three months, he landed a job and called to say he no longer needed ongoing help with rent. We are so incredibly proud of Steve!

We are so incredibly grateful to you for making stories like Steve’s possible. Thank you for your support!
