Leave the Streets Behind
About the Program
“Leave the Streets Behind” is the Legion’s national program to support Veterans experiencing homelessness and is part of the action plan to prevent and eradicate Veterans’ homelessness. The program’s mission is to reach out to Veterans experiencing or at-risk of experiencing homelessness and provide them with immediate support. This program aims to connect Veterans with social and community services, including their local Branch or Command Service Officer. Based on the program started by the Ontario Command 13+ years ago, the BC/Yukon program has recently launched with Comfort Bags and Apartment Kits.
How We Can Help
Comfort Bags
Comfort Bags are backpacks with essential items intended to help provide provisions while a Veteran is awaiting housing or is not yet ready for housing. They contain clothing, toiletries, small food items and are personalized with gender-specific items such as feminine hygiene products. Whenever possible, kits include a plastic sleeping mat. Each backpack includes contact information for the local branch Service Officer.
Apartment Kits
Apartment Kits are a package that includes everything a Veteran would need when moving into housing. They include kitchen items such as pots and pans, linens such as towels and bedding and basic staples such as cleaning supplies. Whenever possible, kits include a donated afghan or quilt. Kits are delivered by volunteers, on moving day, along with a “Welcome Home” note for the Veteran.
