Learning Through Stories, Service, and Community

The Legion Foundation is proud to support programs that help young people learn from Veterans, Elders, and seniors in their communities. Each year, in collaboration with the BC Retired Teachers Association, the Golden Star Award is presented to a school, class or program that celebrates the interactions of senior and students.

One inspiring example is Learning Alternatives, a School District 68 program in Nanaimo, and the 2026 Golden Star Award winner. At Learning Alternatives, students take part in meaningful activities that connect generations and bring learning to life.

Throughout the year, students visit the Nanaimo Military Museum, where senior volunteers share stories about military history and service. Before Remembrance Day, students work with members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 256, learning about the importance of remembrance and honouring those who served. Students also attend a ceremony at the local cenotaph, where Veterans speak directly with them about their experiences.

A special part of the program is weekly visits from First Nations Elder Val White. Through stories, cultural teachings, and guidance, Elder Val helps students learn about Indigenous traditions, history, and community values.

These connections help students build empathy, confidence, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of Canada’s history and cultures. Many students also express their learning through poetry and artwork, including entries in the National Youth Remembrance Contest.

With the grand prize awarded, the school plans to purchase a ceramic kiln for its art program. The kiln will allow students to explore ceramics, create cultural and personal works of art, and develop new skills through hands-on learning.

The Legion Foundation believes that Veterans, seniors, and Elders play an important role in helping young people learn and grow. Programs like this strengthen communities, preserve important stories, and inspire the next generation to remember, respect, and serve others.

Congratulations, Learning Alternatives!
